Let’s assert the power of Reason. Election in USA and in France. Manchester United. Udinese 2–5 Roma.
On Halloween night, with a moon that looks like it’s been sliced in half by a knife, Roma secures a big, high-scoring win in Udine, while Inter loses the derby. With Lazio yet to play today, Roma inches ever closer to the top of the table. Meanwhile, in the political arena, we’ve reached the American mid-term elections—where the Democrats could deal a significant blow to Donald.

Roma also has an important and exciting match ahead of them, the trip to Old Trafford. Manchester is a team with noble traditions that has written football history. It's a world-class team: one of the teams with the most fans in the world. Yet it has been in crisis for some time,
United have had a terrible start this year and are in the Premier League relegation zone. Carrick can’t work miracles. The squad is poorly constructed; there are positions—such as left-winger—for which there isn’t even a suitable player.
Democrats must counter the irrationalism of Donald in the U.S. and of various forms of extremism in France with Reason. In the same vein, Roma—despite the grand legacy of United, and facing a wealthier, more illustrious, and more glorious club that has nonetheless been poorly assembled—must rely on the sound logic behind a squad built with good sense. It is the very same power of Reason that we brought to bear in Udine.
In France, too, it is crucial that the Democrats—caught between various forms of extremism—settle on a single leader; as things stand, the second round will otherwise feature the far-right against the far-left, with one major casualty: France itself.

There is a lesson here for American and French democrats: Roma’s victory in Udine—especially by such a wide margin—was by no means a foregone conclusion. We did well to set the record straight right from the first half. Our standard-bearer this time is Bryan Cristante—Gasp’s [Gasperini’s] mind and mouthpiece on the pitch.
At the start of the second half, we relaxed too much and got a rude wake-up call—or, as my uncle used to say, a svegliafregnoni ("slap in the face")—courtesy of Zaniolo (the best player on his side). Roma also conceded a goal to Palma. Gollini needs to work on coming out for corners into the six-yard box, as well as ensuring that his clearances either go out for another corner or, at the very least, well away from the goal. That said, we defended well thereafter and managed to strike back with a fine goal from Ghilardi in stoppage time.
Both AS Roma and the Democrats face major challenges ahead—for Roma, it’s Manchester United in the Champions League; for the Democrats, it’s the mid-term elections in the U.S. Our strength lies in the reason we bring to bear on the complex problems of the 21st century.
